Revit Central file in Dropbox
I just want to make a little guide for people that wants to make a central file in the dropbox so you don’t run into the same issues as we did last semester.
First of all make a folder in your dropbox and share it:
When this is done and you have invited the people that has to work on the project make sure you have the Dropbox on your computer in the right place. THIS IS VERY CENTRAL all need to have the same PATH to the central file else it won’t work.
Right click the mini icon in your taskbar click -> Preferences -> Advanced ->
We normally go to put the Dropbox on “C:\Dropbox” cause everyone got a C drive on their computer.
From there it’s pretty much straight forward put the Central file in subfolder in your shared folder and make sure nobody touch the central file.
To make a new local file from your home computer inside Revit go “Open” fine the path to the central file -> make sure that “Create new local” is checked. And you got a new local on your workstation at home.
Known issues in accordance to work with Dropbox:
- If you synchronize two people on the same time it will make a conflicting copy so text message ore talk about when people is synchronizing to the central file.

NOTICE IF YOU ARE NOT WORKING FROM YOUR OWN COMPUTER make sure to delete your dropbox (unlink it/uninstall/delete folder) before leaving the computer. Else other user can see/use your files.

I heard a rumor that it's more efficient to set up a server for a central file than use dropbox ... do you guys know anything about it?
The issue with dropbox is, that if you synchronize more than one user at the time you get conflicting models, because of the delay in upload/download time, so that the minus if you are using dropbox, that delay is not a issue on a server. :-)
Thanks, that explains a lot.
